Lincoln Trail and Homestead Park
Macon County, Illinois
In 1830 the Lincoln family, along with extended family members from the Hanks, Johnston, and Hall families settled along the Sangamon River in Macon County, Illlinois, a few miles from Decatur. It was here that Abraham Lincoln split rails for his father’s field, and also ‘hired out’ to split rails for neighboring pioneer farmers. Rail fences were used by pioneer farmers to confine their stock, or to prevent free-range livestock from damaging a crop field. The Lincoln family lived here one year, discouraged by sickness and the harsh climate.
