Abraham Lincoln lived in what is now Spencer County, Indiana, from 1816 to 1830. He wrote ‘my earliest recollection is of this place.’ During his stay, he grew from a 7-year-old boy to a 21-year-old man. On October 5, 1818, his mother Nancy Hanks Lincoln died of ‘milk sickness.’ His father, Thomas, remarried to Sara Bush Johnston, who would then come to live in the cabin with her three children. Lincoln spent most of his time at the farm laboring for his father but managed to find time to educate himself.
