The Search for Nancy Hanks: A Historical Wild Goose Chase, Mitochondrial DNA, & the Maternal Ancestry of Nancy Hanks Lincoln

Presented by Richard Hileman, author/researcher with the Nancy Hanks Lincoln mtDNA Study, published October 21, 2015 at www.familytreedna.com/public/HanksDNAProject/default.aspx?section=news.

Abraham Lincoln was conspicuously silent about the family of his mother, Nancy Hanks. From 1900 into the 1950s, her ancestry was the subject of intense interest and was hotly contested. In 1909, false names for her parents were carved into the granite of the Lincoln Birthplace Memorial. The most recent biographies of Lincoln still give mistaken accounts of her ancestry.  The Nancy Hanks Lincoln mtDNA Study and new historical evidence reveal the surprising truth Lincoln concealed about his mother’s family and ancestry.
